Time: 12:00-2:00 p.m.
The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center seeks pro bono attorneys for three types of housing cases – Eviction Defense, Housing Conditions Calendar, and Eviction Record Sealing. This two-part training is designed to equip attorneys who have had little or no experience in landlord/tenant matters to handle such cases competently and comfortably.
Part 1: Eviction Defense Primer (120 minutes) [Monday, May 6, 2024]
- More than 90% of the tenant/defendants facing eviction routinely appear in court without counsel, while 98 percent of landlords will have representation. Evictions lead to homelessness. With such high stakes, legal representation in eviction matters can make a substantial difference in the lives of individuals and families.
Part 2: Housing Conditions Calendar and Eviction Record Sealing (120 minutes) [Monday, May 20, 2024]
- Housing Conditions Calendar: Many tenants in the District of Columbia are living with deplorable housing conditions. Such conditions not only violate the law but can also affect a family’s health and overall wellbeing. Conditions such as mold, lead paint, vermin, electrical violations, etc. can create extremely dangerous living environments. The Housing Conditions Calendar allows tenants to sue landlords for DC Housing Code violations on an expedited basis. These cases are an opportunity to shift the power imbalance and restore a tenant’s home to a healthy and habitable state.
- Eviction Record Sealing: After the conclusion of an eviction case, some tenants are eligible to have their record sealed. This critically important final step allows a tenant to have a fresh start, so an old eviction record does not impede future housing opportunities.
Format of the Training:
- This training will be hybrid. Both in-person and remote attendance are available.
- Trainees will have the opportunity to ask questions.
- Following the training, trainees will contact the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center to fulfill their pro bono requirement.
PLEASE NOTE: Training participants must agree to accept one pro bono housing case within three months of this training. This training requirement is waived for attorneys employed by legal services providers.
