Description: This second class in our popular Statute Drafting and the Regulatory Process Workshop Series offers a deep dive into the fundamentals of legislative drafting for the United States Congress. You will gain insight into who crafts legislative text and the essential steps for transforming policy ideas into structured legislative proposals. Guided by our distinguished presenters, participants will explore the following:
- The structure of a bill – How to organize a prototypical bill to ensure clarity and coherence
- Drafting style and technique – Best practices for drafting clear, precise, and legally sound text
- Freestanding vs. amendatory provisions – Strategies for drafting new laws versus amendments to existing statutes
- Real-world application – In-class exercises providing hands-on experience in developing, analyzing, and drafting legislative text
This class equips you with practical skills for turning policy concepts into effective legislative language, making it ideal for those involved or interested in legislative processes and policy development.
