ON DEMAND: Exempt Organizations Tax Series: Company Foundations: Strategic Uses and Tax Traps for the Unwary
Company foundations are often used strategically to advance a company’s philanthropic objectives. At the same time, the close relationship between a company and its foundation can lead to inadvertent violations of the self-dealing rules and other compliance issues. In this program, our expert panelists will discuss some of the key strategic advantages of using a company foundation, as well as areas that require careful planning in order to navigate the requirements applicable to tax-exempt public charities and private foundations, including with respect to governance, operations, and grantmaking activities. We will also examine alternative or tandem strategies that companies can use to accomplish their philanthropic objectives, including through direct corporate giving programs and use of donor-advised funds.
