Registering here registers you for all four sessions of this course. There is a one-time $100 charge for the entire course. 
 
This four-part course is sponsored by the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center's Nonprofit & Small Business Legal Assistance Programs, Center for Nonprofit Advancement, and Washington Area Community Investment Fund (WACIF). It is designed for the *non-attorney* nonprofit executive or small business owner with significant human resource responsibilities and other staff that seek to develop their capabilities. Participants will learn the basics of employment law from experienced attorneys at Crowell & Moring LLP.
 
The course will be held VIRTUALLY VIA WEBINAR on four consecutive Tuesday evenings:
 · November 12, 2024, 5-6:30 p.m.
 · November 19, 2024, 5-6:30 p.m.
 · November 26, 2024, 5-6:30 p.m.
 · December 3, 2024, 5-6:30 p.m. 
  
All sessions will be recorded, and registrants will be able to view recordings for two months after the final session.

 

Topics covered will include:

 
“Hiring, Firing, and Performance Management”
 This session will discuss best practices in hiring, onboarding, establishing employee policies and procedures, managing employee performance, and termination.
  
“Employee Compensation”
 This session will focus on minimum wage and overtime obligations under federal and D.C. law, the rules applicable to part-time employees, and the wage-related obligations regarding departing employees.  
  
“Employee Classifications”
 This session will address the difference between employees and independent contractors under the Fair Labor Standards Act and risks of misclassifying an individual with respect to wage/hour and other employment laws. 
 
“Prohibitions on Employment Discrimination”
 This session will explain the various laws that prohibit employers from discriminating against their employees based on an employee’s individual attributes and will focus on strategies to avoid claims of employment discrimination.
