Description: Although practice in Maryland’s and Virginia's appellate courts is like practice in federal appellate courts and the D.C. Court of Appeals, there are significant differences. This informative class is designed for practitioners who are familiar with appellate practice, but who could use guidance for the occasional appeal in Annapolis or Richmond. Our knowledgeable presenters will cover civil, criminal, and family law appeals. The following are among the specific topics they will cover:
How early choices affect how fast the appeal moves
How Maryland courts take their own approach to statutory construction
A review of how summary judgment rulings differ from federal practice in Maryland
Virginia’s use of “Assignments of Error” rather than issues presented
Virginia jurisdictional changes
Unusual features and unwritten rules of Maryland and Virginia certiorari practices
Rules and policies governing citation to unreported opinions
Unique timing and procedures of Maryland and Virginia amicus practices
While this class is a must for all attorneys who handle appellate matters in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, others may find the topics of interest.
Faculty: S. Virginia Bondurant Price, McGuireWoods LLP Steven M. Klepper, Kramon & Graham, PA

While we will continue to support IE to our best effort we highly recommend a browser like Google Chrome or Microsoft EDGE for a more secure and optimized experience. EDGE is pre-installed on Windows 10 machines, and other browsers can be downloaded and installed.
