Description: Join us for this popular annual class as our expert faculty explain how to file requests under the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Our panel will alert those who attend to issues that arise in FOIA litigation through the different perspectives of lawyers for the defendant-agency and for the plaintiff-requester. They will demonstrate how to frame and pursue FOIA requests before different federal agencies and discuss FOIA exemptions. Because FOIA litigation is quite specialized, the class focuses on the litigation of FOIA cases before district courts. Our panel will address the different standards and procedures that apply to FOIA cases. They also will include a brief discussion of Privacy Act requests and litigation. Minimal knowledge of the FOIA will be presumed – but is not required – of those who attend. Faculty: Elizabeth J. Shapiro, US Department of Justice Mark S. Zaid, Mark S. Zaid PC
