Credits: 1.0 Ethics & Professionalism credit hour Description: Thinking of starting a law firm? While the business considerations for doing so will likely be top of mind, lawyers need to consider their ethical obligations when doing so. Join us for this class that will cover the principal ethics rules implicated in starting, and running, a law practice. It will provide practical guidance about how to launch and maintain a law practice consistent with the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct, with a focus on Rules 1.15, 1.7, 1.9, 1.18, 1.5, 1.16, and 5.4(b). Among the topics this informative and practical class addresses will be the significant risks related to IOLTA accounts and misappropriation, conflicts systems, engagement letters, managing client files, and terminating cases. Our faculty expert will provide tips to avoid mistakes. The class will conclude with a discussion of how to take advantage of D.C.’s unique allowance of non-lawyer partnerships. While this class is a must for anyone who is thinking of starting their own firm, solo and small firm practitioners will also receive a multitude of practical guidance to ensure their practices stay on the right side of the ethics rules.
