We are excited to offer this webinar featuring three prominent area organizations that offer training and pro bono opportunities for criminal defense work in D.C. These organizations, because of their training components, are perfect for our young attorneys seeking trial experience under some senior guidance, as well as any attorneys seeking to pay it forward. The three organizations include:
- The Second Look Project (SLP): The Second Look Project works with attorneys, including the court-appointed bar and the pro-bono community, to provide training, support and individual consultation for attorneys willing to represent indigent defendants under D.C.'s Second Look Amendment Act, D.C. Code 24-403.03. As amended in 2019, the Act allows courts to resentence qualified defendants who committed serious offenses before they were 25, and who have already served at least 15 years on their sentence. There is a great need for attorneys to represent these defendants, and SLP is here to help interested attorneys fill that need.
- Rising for Justice (RFJ): Rising for Justice (formerly D.C. Law Students in Court) is a nationally recognized leader at training social justice advocates and representing D.C. residents in grave legal jeopardy. In addition to operating a legal services program with a law school clinical program embedded in it that is focused on enforcing the rights of the District’s low-income tenants, RFJ staff represent respondents in civil protection order and anti-stalking order cases, maintain a Social Work Program that is integrated into its legal services program, and operate an Expungement Program though which RFJ staff partner with pro bono attorneys to provide free legal representation to D.C. residents interested in pursuing the complicated legal process of clearing their criminal records and putting the past behind them.
- National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL): Want experience doing federal clemency work? NACDL is the perfect fit. John Albanes, as Legal Director of its Return to Freedom Project, will discuss how his project provides cases and guidance for attorneys interested in giving back through clemency.
