This program will examine some of the key ethical responsibilities of attorneys in the federal government under the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct, including the duties of competence, diligence and zeal, confidentiality of information, avoiding conflicts of interest, and to exercise independent professional judgment and render candid advice, as well as the duty of a prosecutor in investigating or prosecuting a case not to “improperly favor or invidiously discriminate against any person.” DC Rule 3.8(a). The panelists will discuss important questions that attorneys in federal government employment may face through a moderated discussion with speakers offering various viewpoints. Questions will include: What are attorneys’ obligations to their clients? Are there limits to these obligations? What resources are available to attorneys in navigating difficult ethical issues? What should an attorney do if their personal beliefs conflict with their responsibilities? What obligations apply to an attorney exiting federal government?
