Description: This new and informative class will cover the core concepts in platform economics, which refers to the economic dynamics and principles that govern platforms, which are digital or physical infrastructures that facilitate the exchange of goods, services, or information between different groups. Common examples of these platforms include online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay, social media platforms like Facebook, and app stores like Apple's App Store or Google Play. The class will also address concepts of platform competition, and related antitrust issues. The following are among the specific topics our expert panel will cover:
- Definition of platforms
- Economic models in platforms
- Competition issues in platforms and how competition affects incentive on different sides of a platform
- Discussion of important legal and practical issues related to antitrust, such as market definition, monopolization, mergers, and coordinated behavior
Those who attend can expect to better understand the basic framework of economic and competition issues in platforms.
