Credits: 1.0 ethics & professionalism credit hour (Notes: This class is eligible for 1.0 general credit in Virginia. Also, this class may qualify for substance use disorder and mental health credit in those states having such a requirement.)
Description: Character and fitness are the foundation of professional integrity and public trust in the legal profession. This returning multidisciplinary class offers a practical and candid exploration of character and fitness issues in the D.C. Bar admissions process, providing valuable insight for attorneys, law school administrators, mentors, and others guiding applicants through the path to admission.
Our faculty experts discuss how to anticipate and avoid potential pitfalls before and during the admissions process, emphasizing the critical importance of candor and disclosure. They also address how to navigate situations where it may be unclear whether particular conduct or circumstances fall within the scope of the character and fitness questionnaire.
You will receive guidance on how to discuss past misconduct, demonstrate rehabilitation, and present evidence of redemption in a manner that is forthright and constructive. The session offers practical tips for ensuring the process moves efficiently, as well as insights into the interplay between character and fitness standards and the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct.
Finally, the class provides a step-by-step overview of how to handle informal and formal character and fitness proceedings before the D.C. Committee on Admissions — equipping you with the understanding and confidence to navigate these sensitive matters with professionalism and empathy.
