Description: This informative and practical CLE class addresses one of the most complex ethical issues in the modern legal landscape: the prohibition on unauthorized practice of law (UPL). The focus is on D.C. unique UPL provisions contained in D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 49. Under this rule, admission to the D.C. Bar is required for lawyers practicing within the District of Columbia even if the work does not involve D.C. citizens, D.C. law, or D.C. courts.

The class begins with a foundational overview of the UPL prohibition, including commonly relied-upon exceptions that attorneys often use to navigate multijurisdictional practice. The class includes a focused discussion on compliance strategies for D.C. practitioners, including key takeaways on how to adhere to the District’s UPL rules. Our presenters then examine the requirements to practice law in the District of Columbia.
