Description: Mental health and substance use disorders affect individuals across all walks of life – including attorneys. These challenges are serious, often recurrent, and can have profound consequences on both personal well-being and professional responsibilities. For legal professionals, untreated mental health and addiction issues can lead to ethics violations, disciplinary actions, and impaired client service.

Join our esteemed multi-disciplinary panel for an in-depth discussion on the intersection of mental health, substance use disorders, and legal ethics. This popular annual class explores how these issues arise in the practice of law, their implications in bar disciplinary proceedings, and the resources available to attorneys in need of support.

Our expert panel includes an attorney experienced in representing respondents in disciplinary cases involving mental health and substance use disorders; a senior assistant disciplinary bar counsel who examines relevant ethics rules, disciplinary cases, and the profession's approach to attorneys facing these challenges; and a senior representative from the D.C. Bar Lawyer Assistance Program who provides insights into confidential support services and resources available to attorneys.

This essential class sheds light on the ethical and disciplinary considerations related to addiction and mental health and emphasizes the legal profession's role in supporting colleagues facing these challenges. Whether you are seeking guidance for yourself or looking to better understand how to assist others, this class is a valuable resource for all legal professionals.
