Join the D.C. Bar Arts, Entertainment, Media and Sports Law Community the second Wednesday of every month for an informal and dynamic round table discussion on the most recent developments in Media Law. Guest speakers will present on one or two recent cases and answer questions from participants. In-person meetings will be held at Ballard & Spahr LLP, 1909 K Street, NW. Please check in at the main lobby and take the elevator to the twelfth floor.

AGENDA:

Isaac v. CNN, Inc. et al.

The Delaware Supreme Court in August affirmed the dismissal of the remaining defendants in a defamation case brought by Mac Isaac, the owner of a computer shop in Delaware where Hunter Biden had taken his laptops to get serviced and appeared to forget about them. Isaac famously provided data from the laptops to Rudy Giuliani and, ultimately, the New York Post, spurring a media firestorm. The lawsuit was brought against two news organizations, as well as Hunter Biden, the Biden for President Campaign Committee, and Sen. Adam Schiff. Alison Schary, of Davis Wright Tremaine, which defended CNN in the case, and Lauren Russell, of Ballard Spahr, which defended Politico, will discuss the trial court and appellate proceedings.

Reporting on Federal Law Enforcement in the District.

The federal takeover of D.C. law enforcement has posed challenges for journalists trying to get accurate crime and arrest data. Robert Becker and Fritz Mulhauser, of the D.C. Open Government Coalition, have been briefing journalists and others on strategies for getting public information, including a guide for those tracking policing activities. They will discuss best practices and what they’ve been hearing from reporters.

This brown-bag lunch program is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. As always, please feel free to share this invitation with colleagues. D.C. Bar membership is not required to attend. Non-members will need to create a profile to register.
