ON DEMAND: Access to Justice in COVID-19: How D.C.s Office of Administrative Hearings is Handling Vital Cases
How D.C.s Office of Administrative Hearings is Handling Vital Cases
Credit: 0 Credit Hours
Run Time: 81 Minutes
Although many D.C. lawyers have not yet practiced there, the District’s Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) is a vibrant local forum that hears some of the most significant matters affecting the lives of residents during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Every day OAH’s Administrative Law Judges are deciding unemployment compensation, rental housing, Medicaid and other public benefits cases. As the District is seeing a massive surge in unemployment claims and demand for other safety-net programs, the role of OAH is more important than ever.
Like all other courts, OAH is adapting in real-time to ensure due process and swift adjudication of these important cases, while also responding to quickly changing laws and agency policies. High rates of unrepresented parties – 86% in appeals related to public benefits determinations and 91% in disputes concerning unemployment benefits – also increase the complexity and importance of OAH’s matters during this pandemic.
Join us to learn more about how OAH has been able to respond quickly to provide virtual proceedings in these and other important matters, as well as what challenges the Office and unrepresented parties continue to face during COVID-19. Panelists will discuss the range of important issues that come before OAH, how to ensure due process to all parties, including unrepresented litigants, during a pandemic, and how D.C. lawyers can get involved in growing pro bono efforts for administrative matters.
