The DC Bar Pro Bono Center Future Planning & Probate Program will offer training for new volunteer attorneys regarding the relevant law and practical considerations for both simple estate planning and probate estate administration for low-income DC residents. The Program will conduct the training in four in-person sessions at the DC Bar, 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm on the following dates: May 21, May 28, June 6, and June 9, 2025.
The first two trainings are on Wednesday 5/21 & Wednesday 5/28 and will be on the probate process. These sessions will prepare attorneys to help surviving family members complete required court forms and navigate the process of probate for the property of a deceased family member or friend.
The second two trainings are on Monday 6/2 and Monday 6/9 and will be on future (estate) planning for low to moderate asset DC residents. Attorneys will be trained on completing estate planning documents such as a healthcare power of attorney, general power of attorney, last will and testament, disposition of remains, etc.
Attorneys may attend either set of sessions, or all four, depending on whether they wish to volunteer in probate assistance, future planning, or both. As part of the training, attorneys will be provided with a manual and template documents for assisting clients.
PLEASE NOTE: Training participants must agree to accept one pro bono case from the DC Bar. This training requirement is waived for attorneys employed by legal services providers.
